The Way Things Are

The once mighty Alexandria and the once peaceful nations have fallen into ruin. While war no longer rages across the continent, no peace exists. The four kingdoms that still exist are pale shadows of their former glory.

To the north lies Aundale ruled by Queen Alanna. The lands that were once fertile are now covered by snow for a large part of the year. While the people of Aundale are far from hungry, the wealth that they once knew is no more. In the spring, after the thaws they plant their crops and tend them through the short summer months. When autumn comes and the days begin to grow cold they store what they harvested and hope each winter that the stores they have last through the cold winter.

To the east is the land of the hunters. The land is fertile and the woodlands are full of both vegetation and the hunter's quarry. However, the land is also full of dangers – Many nightmarish creatures roam the land night and day. Most people fear to leave their homes after dark; the ones who do, sometimes are not seen the next morning. The elven nation that resides in the heavily forested parts of the eastern side of the continent are seldom seen, unless they have decide to live among the humans. In the latter case, they live and work with the humans in their villages and towns. King Logian rules the eastern kingdom in name only. Many of his subjects live in the wild or small communities that are close knit and pay little homage. Tax collectors tend to not return with any coin; those who do, tend to find another line of work soon after.

The western kingdom is still known for the weapons that they create and the steel that they mine. The land is stony and mountainous; few crops grow in the hard ground. Mining is a lucrative business in these dark times, as many people want to purchase weapons and tools... however, of late many mining parties have been lost in the depths. It is rumored that dark creatures live in the deep caverns and mines that in the past were mined deeper and more thoroughly. King Boris is a shrewd trader and does what he can to keep the economy of his nation alive, but times are hard and many people could use more food. The dwarves who gave up any kind of planting and harvesting during the last few thousand years mostly sell their services as warriors or armorers to make their way through life.

The Southern Kingdom is a land of mystery to most people of the other kingdoms. They have become a nomadic desert people, they have no king and want no king. The few southerners that travel, usually do so as merchants, carrying goods as they always have. Delivering spices, metals, weapons, and anything else that needs to be moved. Their horses are fast and their owners are typically closed mouthed about the land they hail from. It is rumored that the desert people can be bought and make the most deadly assassins. Over the last two hundred years many dragonborn have migrated to this continent, mostly from the south. They tend to be sell-swords or caravan guards. It seems, though, that they have not been taken into confidence of the desert people, if they passed that way. Many that show up, did not realize that there was any civilization in the vast deserts to the south. It is rumored that there are none.

Wyr is a very small village. There is an inn, a falling apart church building (without a clergy member), a general store, an armory and several farms. The 'mayor' of the town also runs the general store. Each morning farmers bring a small amount of harvested crops and butchered meat to the general store and a few women of the town run the 'farmer's market' just outside of the store. There are less than 100 people living in the town and nearby. The closest major town is the capital of Aundale (to the east) and fort Melville (to the south). The weather is a bit chilly and it is mid Fall. Wyr is northward enough to be very cold at night and cool during the day. Within the new few weeks snow will begin to fall.
